Adapter Expands Stroke for Universal Compatibility

Impetus

A manufacturer of highly specialized robotic surgery implements required additional mechanical stroke to facilitate full actuation across a range of instruments and platforms. The challenge was in overcoming the constraints inherent to the existing robot-side interface and actuators in the standard Instrument Drive Systems.

Insight

Boston Engineering’s approach was to:

  • Brainstorm mechanical concepts to multiply available stroke and down-select most promising options
  • Modeled several concepts and analyzed them
  • Ensured potential designs enabled volume manufacturing

Impact

The resulting prototype adapter met all challenges presented, including extending stoke in both the push and pull direction to achieve full actuation. The design also enabled volume manufacturing, allowed for continued use of existing instruments, and mated seamlessly with existing device platforms. The outcome proved updates could be made to the existing design, provided the value associated with the new performance and elimination of significant spend on a redesign of the entire product line.
