Autonomous Robot Solves Critical Limitation in Tactical Operations

Impetus

  • In tactical missions, gaining access to closed doors is a significant challenge for unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).
  • Traditional methods like explosives or brute force are noisy, destructive, and unsuitable for scenarios requiring discretion.

Insight

  • Conducted feasibility tests to prove design concepts, including 3D scanning of doorways, autonomous arm motion for knob grasping, and navigation through doorways.
  • Partnered with Autonomous Solutions, Inc to successfully prove the system’s feasibility and identify areas for further improvement.
  • Refined the system and created pre-production prototypes for field testing and commercialization.

Impact

  • The Autonomous Urban Reconnaissance Ingress System (AURIS) gripper enables UGVs to open doors autonomously, enhancing safety, operational tempo, and situational awareness.
  • AURIS is a robust, tactically relevant, and field-viable system prepared for deployment in military and first-responder applications.
