Point-of-Care Diagnostic Provides Lab-Quality Results in Minutes

Impetus

Traditionally, only medical labs have the equipment required to process advanced immunoassay tests, which screen for diseases by measuring target proteins, hormones, and antibodies. In addition to the expense, it can take days for anxious patients to get their results for rheumatoid arthritis, prostate cancer, or other diseases.

Insight

A medical diagnostics company selected Boston Engineering to develop a portable immunoassay system for doctors’ offices and other point-of-care locations. Product specifications included a small disposable test cassette and a compact desktop analyzer to provide quantitative blood test results rapidly. Boston Engineering developed the microfluidics-based test product that:

  • Requires only a small patient blood sample
  • Features an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) to increase ease of use
  • Processes up to 20 separate tests concurrently using a single sample (multiplex)
  • Produces highly accurate results in minutes
  • Integrates seamlessly with the client’s existing disposable test cassettes

Impact

  • Healthcare professionals use the quick test results to accelerate patient care and to minimize time-consuming and costly office visits
  • Client received a premium valuation when it was acquired by a multinational biopharmaceutical company
  • Product received clearance in additional markets and is being launched globally
